Today we hear that the dreaded FMD virus is back on our shores. We all hope that this will be rapidly contained and handled much better than in 2001. Please tell us your thoughts.

I am sure all will agree that DERFA has handled this outbreak much better than 2001, but it could have been better, and I think they have just been lucky in some respects. Even though we are over 300 miles from the outbreak, once it was clear that the virus was esentially contained, local state vets could not issue licence to move animals on welfare grounds, adding to the stress and suffering for all involved. Also since 2001 we have been constantly pushed towards on-line appilcation for most of our day to day farming regulatory business, yet I have recieved nothing from DEFRA via email, or 'snail mail' to tell me the current position.

From all of us here in NZ, we hope that the dreaded FMD is containted down south and that your farming freedom will soon be returned. We know that those of you who have animals to shift will be getting more worried by the day, the longer the ban on stock movement is in place.

Here we are back in the thick of another mystifying FMD outbreak, and to make matters worse, Bluetongue is reported to be on these shores. What next?
