2008 Young Farmers Stock Judging Competition

Almost 50 Young Farmers from clubs throughout Cumbria met at Park House Farm, Heversham to compete in the Westmorland County Agricultural Society’s 12th annual Stock Judging event. The competition included judging prime lambs, dairy and beef cattle and a veterinary questionnaire

Sheep id plan could lead to exodus from industry

The European Commission’s plans to introduce compulsory electronic identification (EID) for sheep could lead to a significant number of farmers leaving the industry, the NFU warned today.

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 80 prime cattle, 0 young bulls, 16 OTM, 5439 prime hoggs, 111 spring lambs and 4167 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 8th May, 2008.

Carlisle primestock 7th May

At Borderway Mart on Wednesday 7th May Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly store cattle sale. 1509 store cattle, weanling and calves were forward. Trade was buoyant again for all types.

Wigton Primestock 6th May

Hopes Auction Co, Wigton held their weekly sale of Primestock when there was an entry of 216 prime cattle & 53 bulls, 322 prime hoggs, 153 Spring Lambs & 18 ewes.

Farm Theft Update

Galvanised Steel field gate has been stolen from a farm in the Duddon Valley over the past few days. Approx half a ton of sheep cake has been reported stolen from some farm buildings near Minthorpe
